What might cause me to hear alerts for only some incoming mail but not for others? (I can't say I've truly whittled this down but it seems that the mail with no sounds are from close friends and relatives and people or business' that I don't know get alerts.)

Mail does not distinguish where your mail is coming from.
The sound does depend on your speaker volume and if you have any other sound coming out of those same speakers—it can get lost in the mix.

Vol/getting lost in other sound isn't a problem here as I've often not heard it when there was nothing else playing. And anyway I chose an alert sound that would be so different from whatever else that might be playing so I would easily distinguish it.
